Gillian Webster studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the National Opera Studio. She began her career as a member of the Royal Opera, Covent Garden, where her numerous roles included Pamina (Die Zauberflote), Contessa (Le nozze di Figaro), Micaela (Carmen), Mimi, Euridice, Marzelline (Fidelio), Woglinde and Wellgunde (Der Ring des Nibelungen) and Kátya Kabanová. She has also sung with English National Opera, Komische Oper Berlin, and several other European opera companies. Recent engagements include Galatea with Les Musiciens du Louvre, Dido and Aeneas at the Châtelet Paris, Vaughan Williams' Sea Symphony and Handel's Messiah in Beijing, and Handel's Aci, Galatea e Polifemo with the Gabrieli Consort & Players. She regularly performs chamber music recitals in works by Shostakovich, Chausson, Schubert and Schoenberg. Her recordings include Beethoven's Choral Symphony, Peter Grimes, and Paride ed Elena and she appears in the Covent Garden DVDs of Orfèo and Die Zauberflöte. Gillian has sung under the baton of Haitink, Tate, Gardiner, Solti, Minkowski, McCreesh, Mackerras, Menuhin and Colin Davis. She is currently singing Lonely Child by Claude Vivier with Reinberg de Leeuw in Paris. Future engagements include Beethoven's 9th Symphony in Shanghai, Britten's Spring Symphony in Paris with Leonard Slatkin, and Handel's La Resurrezione with the Gabrieli Consort & Players. |
